Ashiatsu Massage

Blog – Ashiatsu Massage

The foundation for Ashiatsu Massage can be found in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is still performed in China and Japan by practioners trained in a holistic approach to wellness.

A specialized form of massage, Ashiatsu involves expertly trained therapists using bars and other props for support as they walk strategically on clients’ backs, using their feet to tap into the energy channels in the body, known as meridians.

The bars, on the ceiling at Purely You Spa, allow the therapist to vary pressure and weight, ensuring your safety, relaxation and healing. The broad surface of the foot provides a warm, soothing stretch without the discomfort that sometimes accompanies other deep tissue treatments.

Ashiatsu induces a deep relaxation, relieving tight muscles and stress while stimulating the body’s healing abilities. Since the therapists are tapping the meridian points, guests may also leave feeling refreshed and stimulated.

This modality is also excellent for sports preparation and athletic maintenance as it incorporates aspects of stretching and, of course, the large muscle groups are engaged.

So, if you’re looking to walk away from your spa experience feeling euphorically relaxed, healed and “free” – call Purely You Spa to try this Western therapy: 239.331.8266, or book online at www.PurelyYouSpa.com

Freedom Tips, and more!

Sometimes it’s the simple things we need to remember, but often forget, during the various holidays. Case in point, the Fourth of July. While most of us are aware we’re celebrating the nation’s freedom from the British, many of us overlook the basic rights inherent in being an American. For example, you have the ability to choose many, many things. You can choose a religion, a political stance, the type of music you listen to, who your friends are, even what you eat, where and when. At Purely You Spa, we have chosen to be an organic day spa because of the freedoms this affords our staff and clientele – freedom from toxic chemicals, freedom to de-stress and relax, naturally. I don’t want to get too carried away here, after all, July 4th is also about the parties, parades and fireworks. But, for a moment, let’s look at some of the ways we can liberate ourselves from the toxic people, places and things in our lives:

• Reduce, reuse and recycle – you know the adage…if you haven’t worn it, used it or looked at it in 6 months, it’s time to go. Also, recycle your cans, plastics and the like. We only have as much freedom as we do space to enjoy it!

• Go green – skip on the toxic hand sanitizers, bleach and other harsh chemicals that harm you, your children, pets and the environment. doTerra essential oils (and other companies) offer much healthier and safer alternatives.

• Go organic – whenever possible choose organic. It isn’t always easy to do because of costs, but the reality is that by selecting organic whenever possible, you reduce your toxic load, improve your health and wellbeing and reduce medical costs over time. Start with meat/poultry and dairy. The Environmental Working Group’s website (www.ewg.org) can help you identify the safest products and know which fruits and veggies are in the you should purchase organic.

• Liberate yourself from the toxic people in your life – I know, you can’t get rid of family and have to work for a living. That being said, you can lessen the impact of “Debbie Downers,” “Negative Nates” and the others who drain you in body, mind and spirit. Limit your time with “energy vampires” and spend more time with those people that lift your spirits.

• Spend time in nature – this is a great way to offset the impact of draining work and people, as well as help you relish in the nature beauty of our country. Hit the beach, or a trail…take time out to celebrate Mother Nature and all her wonder.

• Exercise – not everyone enjoys the freedom of a body that is able to express through movement so if you can, please do! Dancing, laughing, playing and exercise actually helps detoxify your body by increasing circulation and lymphatic drainage… it does a body and mind good!

• Do nothing – the ultimate freedom…the freedom to do absolutely nothing and enjoy it without guilt or shame! Embrace some solitude and relax; get a massage or manicure, whatever allows your mind and body to completely relax and let go. Celebrate your independence this July 4th by taking care of yourself and the planet, naturally. Happy Fourth of July!!!

Prenatal Massage & Aromatherapy

Beyond “feeling good,” research shows that prenatal massage is good for the body, mind and spirit of both mother and child!

According to the American Pregnancy Association, professional massage can:

  • Improve labor outcomes
  • Improve newborn health
  • Reduce the mother’s anxiety and depression
  • Relieve the aches and pains of pregnancy

So, why aren’t more moms-to-be (and babies) enjoying the mind, body, spirit benefits of massage? They don’t know the facts.

Most prenatal massages, including the Mother-to-Be Massage we offer at Purely You Spa, are adapted versions of Swedish Massage. This gentle massage technique involves applying light pressure to muscle groups resulting in improved lymphatic and blood circulation, relaxation and a reduction in the aches and pains caused by shifting hormones.

In fact, research reveals that women who received bi-weekly pre-natal massages for only five weeks saw a reduction in the “stress hormones” norepinephrine and cortisol, as well as an increase in “feel good” hormones dopamine and serotonin. These changes led to fewer complications during the birth process and fewer complications for newborns themselves.

Since massage improves circulation of the blood and lymph, it reduces edema – the swelling in hands and feet that so often occurs during pregnancy. Getting your fluids flowing again not only reduces pain and swelling, but helps remove waste carried by the body’s lymph system – a win for you and your baby.

Additionally, regular massage can address the sciatic pain that many women experience as the baby grows and its weight presses into the muscles of the lower back, spreading tension to the legs and putting pressure on nerves. Massage eases tension on the muscles, reducing nerve swelling which helps alleviate pain.

Motherhood massages can also ease back pain, joint discomfort, tension headaches, as well as help promote better sleep and improve oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles.

Clearly, adding massage therapy to your prenatal routine provides benefits you and your baby!

However, just like what you eat, it’s critically important you are aware of what you are putting ON your body, especially during pregnancy as everything filters through to the life you are growing inside of you.

This is why Purely You Spa uses only organic products during our Mother-To-Be Massage. It’s also why we are cautious with what essential oils we use with our pregnant clients.

As with massage, aromatherapy during pregnancy can help relax or uplift you, depending on your need, but should be approached with a healthy respect.

It’s critical that you use the highest quality natural essential oils, not those manufactured from harsh chemicals.

Whatever treatments you schedule, be sure to let the spa staff know you are pregnant and how far along you are in the pregnancy. This will help them select the correct oils for aromatherapy, as well as be prepared with appropriate support pillows for your massage.

At home, oils can be diffused or applied to the skin, but only after a few drops are mixed with a “carrier” such as coconut oil to dilute it. Mixing essential oils with coconut oil and massaging into the feet is a wonderful way to experience their benefits.

Diffusing oils is a wonderful way to use them during pregnancy because you are inhaling them verses applying them onto your body. For best results, look for a heat-free diffuser so that the essential oils aren’t being altered.

The general rule-of-thumb is that the following oils are safe during pregnancy:

  • Bergamot – calming aroma and relieves anxiety, stress and depression
  • Coriander – calming and yet gently uplifting
  • Frankincense – mood uplifting and stress relief; calming
  • Geranium – uplifting and gently inspiring; evokes a sense of calm and tranquility
  • Grapefruit – induces positive feelings of hope; relieves depression, anxiety and stress
  • Lavender – assists the body in adapting to stress/imbalances; relaxing and winding down before bedtime; balancing properties to boost stamina and energy
  • Lemon – uplifting to the body and mind; improves concentration
  • Sandalwood – deep relaxation of the nervous system; natural sleep remedy; improves concentration and eliminates brain fog
  • Wild Orange – happiness and warmth
  • Ylang Ylang – fights depression; relaxes body and soul; drives away anxiety, sadness and chronic stress; induces feelings of joy and hope

While I don’t want to scare you, it is critical that you AVOID the following essential oils during pregnancy and lactation for your safety and that of your child – please note that we are asking you to avoid these items in their essential oil form, not as a spice, or food product:

  • Almond – bitter
  • Basil
  • Black pepper
  • Cedarwood
  • Chamomile
  • Cinnamon
  • Clove
  • Fennel
  • Horseradish
  • Jasmine
  • Lemon
  • Lemongrass
  • Mustard
  • Myrrh
  • Nutmeg
  • Oregano
  • Peppermint
  • Pine
  • Rose
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Stinging nettle
  • Thyme

Bring on the HEAT!

Purely You Spa is proud to be adding a new healing component to our already extraordinary organic massage services – the Bio Mat!

Bio Mats provide the body instant access to the healing properties of Far Infrared Rays (FIR) – a form of light energy that comes from the sun but can’t be seen by human eyes due to longer wavelengths.

FDA approved, FIR is absorbed through the skin where is transforms from light energy into heat energy. This thermal effect deep within our tissues gives you an immediate (15-30 minutes) sense of wellbeing, but also provides many more significant healing properties.

FIR is not new – in fact, you enjoy it regularly when you head out into some sunshine! Additionally, research shows it’s the same energy used in ancient modalities such as Reiki and Chi Gong.

Beyond helping you feel good, the FIR in the Bio Mat:

  • Expands capillaries, increasing blood flow/circulation, regeneration and oxygenation which also helps with breathing issues and congestion
  • Provides full-body detoxification as increased circulation helps elimination of fats, chemicals and toxins from the blood, including heavy metals, free fatty acids, excess sodium, uric acid – the very things that cause illness, disease, pain and aging
  • Stimulates enzyme activity helping the body rid itself of damaged and diseased tissues
  • Boots metabolism providing a lymphatic cleansing, cleaning the body of even more toxins
  • Allows the body to remove toxins through the skin verses the delicate kidneys
  • Enhances the body’s ability to rebuild injured tissues – FIR increases growth of cell, DNA syntheses and protein synthesis, reducing scar tissue, healing burns and acne, reducing wrinkles
  • Increases the production of white blood cells by bone marrow and killer T-cells by the thymus, strengthening our immune system
  • Relieves tension, maximizing the body’s own healing abilities; reduces nerve and muscle soreness, muscle spasms, swelling and inflammation
  • Increases heart rate and cardiac output while decreasing diastolic blood pressure – all good for our hearts!
  • Aids in the destruction of cancer cells which can’t survive if their temperature raises above 107.6F
  • Helps kill various pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites
  • Improves the body’s functions and relieves stress and tiredness, thus improving sleep

Other medical issues helped by time on a Bio Mat include: depression and insomnia; Diabetes; Fibromyalgia; Allergic Rhinitis; Chronic Fatigue Syndrome; Anorexia Nervosa; reproductive concerns; Reynaud’s Disease and Scleroderma.

We are truly excited about the healing properties of FIR and look forward to introducing you to this new component of healing. For more information and to add time on the Bio Mat to your massage, call 239.331.8266, or email info@PurelyYouSpa.com

Reflexology

Reflexology is the science of applying firm pressure to specific points on the feet, hands and ears that are known to correspond to every gland and organ in the body.

The Egyptians were using Reflexology as early as 2330 BC and its cultural importance is displayed for all to see in the illustrations of its use on the wall of the Physicians Tomb, Ankhmahor, at Saqqara in Egypt. Ankhmahor was so revered that he was second only to the King in power!

As the Egyptians learned early on by studying the brain and body, stimulating reflex points in the hands, feet and ears in the appropriate way can help alleviate many medical problems, as well as prevent issues from developing.

Research shows that Reflexology helps with stress reduction by inducing relaxation, allowing the body’s immune system to balance and energy to flow.

It also improves circulation, helping the blood carry oxygen and vital nutrients to the cells, while also helping to carry toxins out of the cells.

Those suffering from nerve pain can benefit from Reflexology as well since it stimulates more than 7,000 nerves in the feet, opening and clearing neural pathways, interrupting pain pathways to help reduce pain.

Along with stimulating circulation of blood, Reflexology also stimulates the lymphatic system. This not only helps reduce the risk of infection, but cleanse additional toxins from the body. It also releases endorphins, the body’s natural “high” inducing chemicals.

All of this leads to enhanced immune function and a very relaxed, refreshed and detoxified body. Specifically, Reflexology has been shown to help with:

  • Allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Back Problems
  • Blood Pressure
  • Bowel Disorders
  • Constipation
  • Eczema
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Gynecological Disorders
  • Hay Fever
  • Insomnia
  • Knee Problems
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Muscle Tension
  • Neck Problems
  • PMS/Hormonal Problems
  • Respiratory Problems
  • Sinusitis
  • Stress Disorders
  • Thyroid Imbalance

As with other massage-related services, we highly recommend you drink plenty of purified water afterwards to help the body rehydrate and clear toxins.

Valentine’s Day SELF LOVE!

It’s February which means it’s almost St. Valentine’s Day!  For many, this is a terrific time of year – celebrating our special love! For others, it’s a reminder that we’ve been “unlucky in love.” Whether you fall into one of these two categories or somewhere in between, we all need to nurture at least one relationship in our lives first and foremost…the relationship we have with ourselves. The truth is that there is really only one person you spend every moment of every day with – YOU! So, the question becomes “How are you nurturing your relationship with yourself?”I’m fond of saying “you can’t give what you don’t have” which means that you have to make sure your love account is full before you start withdrawing from it to give to others. I know there are voices in your head saying things like: “Yeah, yeah, yeah…I’ll get on that after I do the 10 loads of laundry, drop the kids off at school, take grandma to the bank, complete that project… I don’t have time.” To many of us, the idea of self-care is foreign. But, it’s critically important and something we need to do as it truly does add to the quality of your life and, therefore, the quality of your relationships with others. What this means is not just taking care of yourself by getting rest when you are tired or going to the doctor/holistic practitioner when ill, but eating well, exercising regularly and scheduling time for whatever your version of “play” is. If you’re daunted by the prospect, here are some ideas for you:

  1. ·Color with your children or take an art class
  2.   Take yourself (and your dog) for a walk
  3. Dance while vacuuming OR if you truly want to dance cha cha cha yourself over to this website www.naplesballroom.com. It has a lot of useful information on the places you can go to in Southwest FL to learn how to dance!
  4. Sing in the shower – everyone can be Pavarotti or Katy Perry in their own shower
  5. Use cookie cutters to give shape to your sandwiches
  6. Pamper yourself regularly – taking care of your body on the outside (i.e., spa treatments) helps heal your body on the inside
  7. Reserve some solo time to deal with emotions – lean into the good, bad and ugly and learn whatever lessons you can
  8. Watch movies in bed on a rainy/snowy afternoon
  9. Read a book or magazine for fun or to enrich your body/mind/spirit
  10. Meet with friends regularly to catch up, share and support each other
  11. Reserve 10 minutes every morning or night to give thanks for all your blessings – start with one and you’ll soon discover several more
  12. Take a long bubble bath
  13. Go cheer your favorite sports team (i.e., the USA at the Winter Olympics)

One of the best things you can learn to do is to be fully present in each moment. This means that when you’re at work, you dive in and get the job done. When you’re at the dinner table, you really listen to your family and enjoy their company while you nourish your body. If you’re out with friends, put down the phone (after taking pictures, of course) and relish the love, support and laughter you are sharing. In this way, your making deposit after deposit into your personal love account so that the next time you need to make a withdrawal, you have more than enough in reserves to keep things in balance, naturally! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Forget Resolutions, Start 2014 in Action!

A Relaxed Approach to Holiday Stress Relief

At this time of year, it’s far too easy to get caught-up in decking the halls, planning amazing holiday meals and finding the perfect gift for your loved ones.

Toss in more traffic, last minute projects at work and time with frazzled family and friends and you’ve got a recipe for stress. Keep that going long enough and you’ll be like that over-baked bunch of gingerbread folks I tossed out for the birds to enjoy (burnt out).

While it’s wise to spend time each day reflecting on what this time of year is truly about – friends, family members and other blessings – I also think we need to commit to taking care of ourselves this holiday season.

Yes, this can be a radical concept for some of us who are used to putting our own needs at the bottom of the wish list. But, taking a few moments each day to nourish your body, mind and spirit will allow you to have a more enjoyable holiday. Your good cheer is sure to spread among family, friends and coworkers, as well as help you deal with any of those Grinch-like folks milling about this season.

This doesn’t have to be terribly complicated. Most of us are aware a good diet and a supplement can help. On top of that, the things I’m suggesting may be as simple as joining a friend for shopping and coffee/tea to catch-up (what an amazing gift that would be); reading a bedtime story to your children; enjoying a glass of wine while reading a magazine or book.

Here are some additional stress-less activities to help you enjoy this holiday season :

  • BREATHE! This seems obvious, but so few of us do this well when we’re stressed. Typically, we chest/shallow breathe. Here, I’m suggesting some deep breathing to really clear the body, mind and spirit. Breathe in for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of six and release to a count of eight. Do this a few times and you’ll realize you feel lighter and brighter.
  • Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. Don’t laugh, it’s what experts agree is best. Of course, they probably aren’t living with your dog, snoring spouse or fussy infant. Just do the best you can!
  • Wake-up 5 to 15 minutes earlier each morning and to the edge off the morning rush. You’ll relax a bit knowing you’ve got those extra moments to enjoy a cup of tea, comb your hair or pack a healthy lunch.
  • Aim for 8 glasses of water a day, filtered if possible. We often mistake dehydration for hunger so always have a glass of water first. Then, wait a few minutes before enjoying that cutout cookie. Dehydration can also leave you feeling tired and irritable.
  • Add some greens and high quality protein to your diet. I know that Santa supposedly lives off of cookies, but outside of the North Pole, this just isn’t the best idea. To ensure a healthy immune system and to stave off those energy/mood swings, aim for 4-5 small, balanced meals a day. That way you won’t feel compelled to binge on chocolate truffles, or need more caffeine to get through the afternoon.
  • Take a nature break. Research has proven that we get a natural lift from being outdoors. So, when you’re feeling stressed, talk a walk. Even five-minutes of time in nature has been proven to boost our immune system and enhance our mood.
  • Play! Whether or not you have kids, the holidays are a perfect time to express the child inside us all. For some, this can be baking and decorating cookies, for others it may be sledding or a trip to the beach. I enjoy relaxing with a dark chocolate coco to a classic holiday movie!
  • Enjoy your favorite music. Do this in the car, while cleaning the house, wrapping holiday gifts,  and cooking/baking. Music can help soothe even the grinchiest of Grinches. So, turn up the tunes and have some fun (see Play).
  • Take at least 5 minutes each day to reflect on the true meaning of the holidays. It’s so easy to get caught up in the gift-giving-game that we forget that this is season is truly about sharing time with loved ones. While you may enjoy a great gift, you will treasure all those memory-making moments of laughter and love.
  • End each day by counting your blessings. What we think about multiples. So, end each day by giving thanks for 5 people, places, events or things that you experienced in the day. As Bing Crosby crooned in the classic movie White Christmas, “When I’m worried and I can’t sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep and I fall asleep counting my blessings.”

Organic Living!

Learn What Going ORGANIC Really Means to YOU – And Look & Feel Great Doing It!

For those of us dedicated to making healthy choices, and making the lovely leap into an organic lifestyle, it’s tough out there! With an overload of (most often inaccurate) information, and those oh-so crafty advertising folks, it is hard to determine what is truly an organic choice. And with a tunnel-vision focus on weight loss at times, especially in the media, it is even harder to understand the long-term benefits of a lifestyle change.

With a tendency to lump all that is “healthy” into one category, consumers are beginning to associate murky words like “natural”,  “green”, “free-range”, “local”, “pro-biotic”, “clean” and even ingredient-driven phrases like “gluten-free” or “sugar free” with organic products. While these terms are certainly not mutually exclusive, they do not in most cases mean the same thing.

Plain and simple, true organic foods and products are fully grown and sold without the use of pesticides, and they need to be certified through a rigorous testing process from the USDA. Not worthy of their stamp of approval? Not worth your time.  Without the seal seen here, the product is likely “FAUXganic” at best.

If you think going organic is all about fluff, fancy words, and Facebook posts to your friends about your awesome new garden, then let’s get serious for a second. Pesticides can cause birth defects, cancer, nerve damage, and other extremely serious health issues. They can be washed off certain types of produce, but even trace amounts of this treacherous treatment are extremely dangerous.

However, positivity prevails! Modern research has led to a proven collection of health benefits from this lifestyle. Just as a handful of almonds is enough for you to get a nutritious and delicious snack, a handful of benefits, seen below, should be enough to get you out the door and to the store (or Farmer’s Market!) immediately:

Nutrients + Taste = Winning Choices for All! Organic foods have shown in studies to contain a higher level of antioxidants than those produced from conventional or harmful methods. They have also been consistently found to taste better through consumer research.

“Extras” For Long Term Health! Some organic produce, like milk and meat especially, have a higher content of omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) – both heart-healthy elements that can balance out the right types of cholesterol in your system.

Immune System Strength! Foods with chemicals and pesticides leave you more susceptible to illness and even some forms of cancer.  You can boost your body’s ability to fight back with the right choices.

Help For YOUR Healthy Weight! While not the most important reason to go organic, some agricultural chemicals can mess with your hormone level and cause weight retention or gain. Help stay at YOUR healthy weight with organic meal choices.

GMO Rhymes With “I Don’t Know”! Since the full harmful effects of Genetically Modified Foods (GMO’s) are still not comprehensively known, the fact that organic products are not genetically tested make them the easy choice.

All of these benefits go hand-in-hand with a dedicated change in lifestyle, not just by what goes in our mouths, but also with the products we use and the daily choices we make. To obtain the long-lasting effects from making the change, always take the time to think outside the box. Stumped on other areas in life to go organic? Not a problem – take a look at how easy (and rewarding) it is to get creative in taking care of yourself, your family, and your environment:

Choose – or make! – organic cleaning products.

  • Select organic paints for your home and office – amazing color choices!
  • Seek out cool and custom organically made children’s toys.
  • Pamper yourself with luxurious feeling organic bed linens and pillows (even mattresses!).
  • Purchase organically made and sourced jewelry as gifts.
  • Set style trends with organic clothing; you won’t believe the coolness of comfy organic cotton.
  • Donate to organizations dedicated towards the proper certification of organic products or organic farming co-ops.

Notice something missing from the list that is near and dear to Purely You Spa’s holistic hearts? That’s right – organic health and beauty products! To get the most out of your skin, and look and feel your best, you need to use what is from the earth, and from the earth only. Most of the products we use at Purely You Spa are even natural enough to EAT outside of being truly 100% organic.

Our full line of Organic Products, and our status as the only CERTIFIED Organic spa in Naples are the basis of our vision, and our success as well – our clients see results, love the way they feel, and are proud to know they are supporting organic missions. For those looking for long-term results, we also offer Organic Lifestyle Planning customized to your individual needs, and Anti-Aging Seminars with an organic focus (October 28th!).

If you still aren’t 100% convinced on what an organic lifestyle can mean for YOU, consider this. Most of the modern material written focuses on why it is good for YOU, but we also need to understand, as a global community, why it is good for the environment. If we expect our planet to produce agricultural gems for our own energy, we must in turn make educated choices to give right back. Here are just a few of the ways going organic can lead to a healthier planet:

Sustainability: Organic farmers focus on the big picture, using their land and resources responsibly without focusing on short-term yields.

Soil Building: Organic farming practices like cover crops, special fertilizers, and rotation lead to increased soil quality. This ensures longer production and even a more robust abundance of vitamins and minerals in what is produced.

Biodiversity: When they rely on plants that adapt to their environment and weather without using unnatural pesticides, organic farmers increase the strength of certain produce to survive in the long run. No pesticides also mean a healthier ecosystem in surrounding areas for other plants and wildlife.

Cleaner Water Tables: Since they ditch chemicals to the curb, organic farmers keep nearby water sources clean; certainly a win-win for everyone, no matter if you have 2 legs, 4 legs, wings, or gills!

So, the reasons behind any of us going organic will be of course subjective – we might be searching for more balance, a better diet, a solution to world conservation, or a way to protect wildlife. But keep in mind, after we are truly educated on what the lifestyle is all about, the benefits we receive and the standards we need to hold our choices to are universal.
